Bally Peak Outlook 2020: A 47-Day Expedition to the Himalaya

Last fall, in conjunction with the #BallyPeakOutlook Foundation, an expedition team embarked on the first phase of our “8x8000m” pledge to clean up the base camps of Nepal’s eight 8,000-meter mountains.

After months of lockdown, the extraordinary 47-day cleanup, led by environmental activist and mountaineer Dawa Steven Sherpa, removed 2.2 tons of waste from the base camps of Cho Oyu (8,188m), Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m) and Makalu (8,485m).

The unprecedented events brought upon by Covid-19 have had consequential effects on Nepal, whose tourism industry supports over 1 million jobs. Supporting the local community of the Everest region, who were deeply impacted by the absence of tourists, the expedition provided critical income for locals, including professional climbers, cleaners, sorters, packers, porters and support staff.

Watch the introductory film of our #8X8000M project here, narrated by the local voices of the Himalayan community.
